Rookie Card Year: 2008-09
Investment Rating: 7.5
Part of a youthful core on the verge of breaking out, collectors should seek Kevin Love cards while they're still relatively affordable. Love has achieved success not from highlight dunks or flashy play, but from consistency. This consistency has allowed him to average a double-double for his career, with rebounds and points, and his totals just keep increasing. During the 2010-11 season, Love made NBA history by recording a double-double in 53 straight games, the longest such streak since the 1976 NBA-ABA merger.
It is clear that the Minnesota Timberwolves knew what they were doing during the 2008 NBA Draft when they made a trade that saw their number three pick, OJ Mayo, head to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Love, the fifth pick. From there, Love has been one of the lone bright spots on the Timberwolves, who have struggled through several losing seasons. But now they appear headed in the right direction.
Although it seemed that Love was building his resume toward a jump to a big-market team and huge payday, he signed an extension with the Timberwolves and seems set on bringing a winning tradition back to Minnesota. While his play has earned him hobby attention and NBA accolades (2010-11 Most Improved Player and All-Star replacement), team success is the final hurdle he must clear to enter the top-tier of the hobby world. Recent additions to the team, including Ricky Rubio, have the Timberwolves in a position to start competing now and for many year in the future. When that happens, Kevin Love cards and memorabilia should see significant increases.
Love was part of a strong 2008 Draft that included 2010-11 MVP Derrick Rose and Love's UCLA teammate, Russell Westbrook. The value of Kevin Love cards, particularly rookies, are already on the rise but there is still room for considerable growth. Currently, his values place him third among this group, but Love can overtake Westbrook and even rival Rose for top-billing if he continues his progression and pushes the Timberwolves deep into the playoffs. Kevin Love cards, along with those of Rose and Westbrook give strong reasons for collectors to track down and bust boxes of 2008-09 products.
One glaring observation with Kevin Love is that his non-card autograph values are incredibly low considering his production and potential. That can be attributed to the limited exposure of the small-market Timberwolves. This will not be the case for long and represents the best opportunity for investment.
Kevin Love has nearly 30 rookie cards that would mostly fall in the budget or premium category.
Love also has two cards from 2007-08 products which receive solid interest despite not being true rookie cards as they were both redemptions. They include 2007-08 Finest #105 and 2007-08 Chronology #255 #/250.
All three of Love's top rookie cards feature on-card autographs and jersey pieces.
Top Kevin Love Rookie Cards
2008-09 Exquisite Collection provide the best of all rookie Kevin Love cards. The striking card showcases a diamond-shaped jersey pieces above a large on-card autograph. The understated blue and gray color scheme makes for a great backdrop and allows the full-color image of Love to stand out more. Numbered to 225, this card is easily the most valuable and desirable Kevin Love card.
Another card with an on-card autograph and jersey piece, the 2008-09 SP Authentic Kevin Love rookie card is numbered a bit higher than the Exquisite with a print run of 299. Gold foil gives the card more distinction and it has also proven to be a collector favorite.
With the lowest print run of the three, Love's 2008-09 UD Black rookie card represents the best value. The card features both an on-card autograph, a jersey piece and is limited to only 99 copies. The design is a little more bold but considering what the card includes and the fact that it can be had for less than half the cost of the Exquisite, it is a hard card to pass up.
