Overview

As a member of the Hall of Fame and one of baseball's biggest characters, Gaylord Perry cards and autographed memorabilia have long been collectible. As a member of the 300-Win Club, Perry has a dedicated collector following. During his 21-year career, Perry won two Cy Young awards. He retired with a lifetime ERA of 3.11 and 3,534 strikeouts. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.

Perry's rookie card is from the 1962 Topps Baseball set. He also has three pre-rookie cards. They include cards issued by Union Oil and Tacoma Bank in 1961 and a San Francisco Giants team card in 1962.

His first certified autographed card was released in the 1991 Upper Deck Baseball as part of the Heroes of Baseball insert set. The card is serial numbered to 3,000 and is found in High Series packs. Perry's first game-used memorabilia card was released in 2000 Upper Deck Legends.

Gaylord Perry has been a regular signer at sports cards and collectibles shows. The supply of his autographed memorabilia has a healthy balance with frequent demand. Being a 300-Win pitcher contributes significantly to the consistent interest in his memorabilia.

Perry's rookie card is accompanied by a star-shaped 1962 Rookie logo. It is a very tough card to locate with good centering. As a result, professionally graded copies getting a high grade carry a substantial premium.

Gaylord Perry Key Signature Attributes: An authentic Gaylord Perry signature autograph will exhibit several distinguishing characteristics. Regardless of  the type of item or when it was signed, look for the following signature features:

  1. It is written on a slightly elevated horizontal plane in cursive.
  2. The "G" and "P" are larger than the other letters.
  3. The "a-y" combine to form a singular character with the loop of the "y" dropping below the plane.
  4. The "l-o-r-d"  letters are very narrowly spaced and hard to discern other than the loop of the "l" and "d."
  5. The "e" has no opening. The "r"s are written similarly.
  6. The "y" of the last name often has a more narrow loop in the tail, if one exists at all.
