Emmitt Smith was the 17th overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft. An All-American at the University of Florida, Smith made an immediate impact with the Dallas Cowboys and was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
A cornerstone of the Cowboys' dynasty in the 1990s that won three Super Bowls, Smith was named the Super Bowl XXVIII MVP. His longevity and excellent teammates contributed to Smith surpassing Walter Payton as the NFL's all-time leading rusher with 18,355 yards.
Smith's list of statistics and accomplishments are nothing short of legendary: NFL record for career rushing touchdowns (164), NFL record for career 100+ yards rushing games (78), eight-time Pro Bowl choice, four-time All-Pro selection, and membership on the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team. Smith was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
Since retiring, Smith has also made an impact on pop culture, winning the third season of the reality TV show, Dancing with the Stars.
Emmitt Smith's most valuable sports collectible is his signature, particularly when applied to such items as official league footballs, and full-sized helmets. Tickets from his milestone games, and Super Bowl items also are popular. The Fleer Update card #U40 provides collectors with another affordable opportunity to acquire a rookie card of one of the greatest running backs in league history. This card, printed on the higher end stock Fleer used to differentiate themselves in the market is a nice addition to any collection.
1990 Pro Set #685
The highly over-produced Pro Set card, must be mentioned for the sake of thoroughness. Like most everything that has the Pro Set name, it was printed in huge numbers. Supply will always exceed demand.
1990 Score Supplemental #101T
Easily Smith's most popular rookie card, it commands top-dollar in high-grade condition. The card features an in-game shot of Smith being pursued by the New York Giants. The dark borders make it a somewhat condition sensitive.
1990 Topps Traded #27T
Featuring a young Smith taking a knee, this is one of Smith's most valuable rookie cards. High-grade copies can be found for an affordable price, typically under $50.
