Rookie Card Year: 1986-87

Dominique Wilkins was an elite scorer in his prime and widely-regarded one of top NBA dunkers of all-time. "The Human Highlight Film" wowed fans for many years and Dominique Wilkins cards and memorabilia remain popular with collectors.
Born in Paris, France to military parents, Dominique Wilkins excelled at high school basketball stateside, and later attended the University of Georgia. After three seasons with the Bulldogs, including a SEC Player of the Year award in 1981, Wilkins entered the 1982 NBA Draft. He was selected by the Utah Jazz with the third overall pick, but was traded to Atlanta several months later.
Although Dominique Wilkins spent the majority of his time with the Hawks, the end of his career saw shorts stints with the Clippers, Celtics, Spurs and Magic, intermixed with overseas play in the European leagues. Upon his final retirement in 1999, Wilkins was a nine-time NBA All-Star, two-time Slam Dunk Contest Champion and was the NBA Scoring Champion in 1986. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Collectors have plenty of options when talking about Dominique Wilkins cards. The high-flyer was included in NBA products throughout the 1980's and 1990's and his certified autographs are in good supply. Dominique Wilkins has signed for many recent products from Leaf and Panini.
Early Dominique Wilkins Cards
Star Company had it's brief run as the sole NBA card producer from 1983-84 to 1985-86 and Wilkins was one of several HOF players to have their first card with Star. Although they are not universally considered true rookies, a strong following exists for the first-year cards for Dominique Wilkins and other top players. The bright red border works well with the Hawks' color scheme and the image shows Wilkins completing a emphatic dunk. There is also an All-Rookies card for Wilkins (#8 of 10) from the same year that features a bright yellow border.
While an open-mouthed, pre-free throw image is not the best way to showcase a dunk champion on a card, Dominique Wilkins occupies a spot on the storied 1986-87 Fleer rookie checklist. Technically in his fifth season when this "rookie" was released, ungraded card values are cheap.
Wilkins was also included in the 1986-87 Fleer Stickers insert set and the sticker card can be found for just a few dollars.
