O.J. Simpson’s Memorabilia Collection Headed for the Auction Block
O.J. Simpson's now infamous sports memorabilia collection will soon be headed to the auction block. The collection, which includes an array of various autographed footballs and jerseys, was used as evidence in Simpson's armed robbery and kidnapping conviction last year.
The sports memorabilia was transported from Las Vegas to a Santa Monica courthouse, where they are currently awaiting a sheriff's sale, according to a lawyer for Fred Goldman.
The memorabilia will be sold to satisfy part of the $33.5 million civil judgment against O.J. Simpson for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole, and Goldman's son, Ron Goldman, the lawyer said.
Goldman attorney David Cook said he expects the dealers and perhaps others involved in the case will try to claim the items before the sale.
The actual value of Simpson's sports memorabilia collection remains to be seen. The current recession, coupled with Simpson's lack of popularity, leaves a great deal of doubt regarding how much the upcoming auction will net for the Goldman family.
“We get offered O.J. Simpson memorabilia, and we always decline it," said Darren Julien, owner of memorabilia auction house Julien's Auctions. “It's just not an iconic thing that people would say, ‘I want that in my home.'"
Simpson is currently serving a 9-33 year prison sentence in Nevada. His attorneys filed an appeal to the case last month, asking a judge to throw out the armed robbery and kidnapping conviction. Attorneys filed a motion Monday asking the Nevada Supreme Court to let him out of prison while it decides whether to overturn the conviction. He is eligible for parole in 2017.
