Nude Photo of Joe DiMaggio Up for Auction
An image entitled "Joe DiMaggio Boudoir Photo" is causing a stir in the collecting world as it pictures the Yankees legend completely nude. Lelands auction house is selling the image that purportedly shows DiMaggio while in the showers in the Yankees clubhouse. DiMaggio is not wearing any clothing and another man is present in the photo as well.
Some are questioning the authenticity of the photo, including Morris Engelberg, the lawyer for DiMaggio's estate. Based on DiMaggio's guarded nature throughout his life, Engelberg believes there is no way that the "Yankee Clipper" would ever pose naked in a photo, and certainly not with another person. Engelberg said, "When Joe DiMaggio went to the bathroom in a restaurant, I always had to escort him and I made sure no one took a picture of him at the urinal."
Lelands contends that the image is authentic and does not plan to end the auction despite complaints from Engelberg and DiMaggio's family. The image first emerged at a San Francisco art gallery in 2009. Bidding on the photo has reached $1,331 and the auction closes on June 24th.
Joe DiMaggio is one of the all-time great baseball players in MLB history. He spent his entire 13-year career with the Yankees and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1955. DiMaggio passed away in 1999 at the age of 84.
