Welcome to the Second ever VCR Top 25 Weekly Hot List. The goal of the VCR (Veteran Cardboard Rankings) is to be the weekly counterpart to our RCR (Rookie Cardboard Rankings). We feel that creating a list for rookies and one for veterans offers a far greater degree of accuracy than a combined list. The VCR is composed of the Players who are at the pinnacle of their respective sports. This represents the big leagues, the RCR represents the Minors (Rookies). What will make this fun is to see who can make the jump from the RCR to VCR! In order to make the VCR, you gotta be the best of the best, all too often hot lists are filled with players who are simply hot, but will never get the call to hall.
THIS WEEK....
LeBron James holds onto the #1 spot for the second week in a row. Is it just me, or does it feel like LeBron is destined to get his first ring this year? Crosby easily holds onto the #2 spot. His 37 goals not only leads the NHL, but is just 2 shy of his career high of 39! What's scary for the rest of the NHL is that the 22-year old Crosby was arguably the best player in the NHL without being a lethal goal scorer! The "Anti-Crosby", Alexander Ovechkin Moved up 1 spot after the Capitals won their 11th game in a row.
It appears as though the "powers that be" (price guides) have finally taken notice of Joe Mauer. For some reason they keep talking about how under-booked he is, yet they don't boost his book value significantly??? On E-Bay, many of his key rookies have been going for more than book, on top of that, there simply isn't enough Mauer's in the Secondary Market to meet the growing demand. I'm relieved that my Mauer Rookie Auto collection is nearly complete. In my opinion, Mauer's 2002 Bowman Chrome Auto Rookie will at the very least double it's current book value over the next 6-8 months ($200 right now!). You'll notice that I've moved Mauer ahead of Pujols, which isn't a knock on Pujols. It's simply a reflection of the current demand for anything Mauer.
I think it's safe to say that Kevin Durant is an absolute Super Star! It's hard to argue that he's not one of the top 5 players in the NBA. He's averaging 29.7 ppg and has Oklahoma City in the play-off hunt at 27-21.
With the NFL season soon coming to a close, collectors are getting Baseball fever. Accordingly, Chase Utley, Mariano, Ichiro, and Zack Greinke each make their VCR debut this week. Some might argue that Lincecum belongs on the list ahead of Greinke, but I feel that Greinke has a shot at being one of the best ever. I don't think there's a right answer, it's just a matter of taste, you really can't go wrong with either Ace. I think a lot of people assume there is this HUGE demand for A-Rod after his Octember (October + November) success, but there's not. Collectors haven't made up their minds on what they think about the Yankees 3rd baseman. Personally, I don't consider his 94 SP Rookie a must have anymore and I think a lot of collectors feel the same.
