Mantle Rookie Card, Other Yankees Items Highlight Upcoming Sports Sale by Philip Weiss Auctions
A graded 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie card, a program from the 1927 New York versus Pittsburgh World Series and a full Yankee Stadium ticket from Lou Gehrig's Memorial Day in 1941 are just some of the attractions for New York Yankees collectors due to be auctioned off by Philip Weiss Auctions on October 4.
The Long Island auction house isn't specifically theming the sports portion of its upcoming two-day sale around the Yankees, but many of the most prominent lots are made up of Bronx Bombers memorabilia. Among the more notable ones are a PSA 9 Babe Ruth autographed baseball, a Bill "Moose" Skowron game-worn Yankees jersey and team-signed baseballs from several championship seasons.
Fans of teams other than the Yankees can check out signed Hall of Fame cards from Grover Cleveland Alexander and Nap Lajoie and an SGC 3 Ramly Tobacco Walter Johnson card. There are also numerous ungraded baseball cards from various sets of the 1950s and 1960s.
The sports items will be joined by lots featuring rock and roll memorabilia, comic art and other pop culture items. A session on October 3 will be devoted to stamps, coins, rare books and non-sports autographs.
"We can honestly say there will be something for just about everybody at this auction," Philip Weiss, head of Philip Weiss Auctions, said in a recent press release. "It promises to be a long weekend. Hundreds of great lots will change hands."
Live bidding will take place at the company's gallery with a five-percent discount on buyer's premiums. Online bids will also be accepted live via Proxibid.
