Law of Cards: Panini’s Busy Week at the Trademark Office

It's been a busy few days for Panini at the Trademark Office. As we already mentioned, Panini continued its efforts to secure the mark LIMITED for use with trading cards. Second, the Trademark Office granted Panini registrations for RATED ROOKIE and NATIONAL TREASURES.

Finally, Panini filed new trademark applications for PRIZM (to protect its new brand) and TITANIUM (to protect an existing product line).

What's interesting about the TITANIUM filing is that although trading cards, for the most part are cardboard, trading card manufacturers love to name their products after metals. Bowman Chrome, Topps Chrome, Leaf Metal, Topps Gold Rush, Topps Platinum, Panini Gold, Panini Titanium are the ones I can name off the top of my head.

Only a few of these names are the subject of trademark registrations (Chrome) or applications (Sterling, Titanium). This latest metal filing may start a gold rush (errr -- metal rush) where each trading card company tries to stake out their own trademark claim for certain metals.

I can't wait to see who files for exotic metals like molybdenum, osmium, ruthenium and rhodium.

If a rush starts, I'll take dibs on lithium for a Law of Card Lithium line of cards: a set of mood-stabilizing cards that'll calm you down after you've been sued or subpoenaed by the trading card industry.
