Heavenly Heyward Hit Comes Out of Minnesota Hobby Shop!
When a card company releases a preview sheet for an upcoming product, they usually picture a couple decent base cards, maybe a parallel or insert, a couple of autos, and some crazy One of One that you have absolutely no chance on earth of pulling! One can always hope for a case hit, but pulling the best card in an entire print run is a completely different thing.
Billy's Sports Treasures in Savage, MN is known for it's big hits. Just when Owner Bill Terwey thought he had seen it all, Ryan Schuler, a regular at Billy's, stopped in to grab a box. At Billy's, Ryan is known for 2 things:
- Collecting Football Cards
- His ever optimistic approach to collecting. He can find the good in even the worst of boxes.
Ryan walked up to the counter and asked Bill if he had any recommendations. Bill suggested he try 2010 Topps Pro Debut, which had just arrived earlier in the day. Ryan decided to give it a try and Bill asked him which box he wanted, not believing in superstition Ryan told Bill to pick one out, Bill grabbed a box from the middle of stack and handed it to him.
After opening a few packs, he noticed a fold-out card of some sort. He carefully folded it open to reveal this card:
Although I wasn't there for the pull, I was shown the card later that day. I just happened to be stopping in to pick up a box of 2010 Topps Pro Debut and noticed an odd, yet exciting vibe in the store. Aware of my obsession with Heyward, they prepared me for the bad news. This didn't feel like missing out on a case hit news, this felt like something much bigger. They showed me the Heyward, I couldn't believe my eyes, it was the one from the ad!
I'm just glad I got to see it and that it was pulled by a stand-up collector like Ryan. After working in a card store, the one thing I can tell you is that cardboard charma does exist. The good guys always seem to have the best luck when it comes to ripping product.
