Ebay's fervent pace of increasing listing and final value fees continues to erode the profit margins of online sellers and has spawned the birth of several online auction sites, many of them specifically focused on collectibles and memorabilia. Collect.com, powered by Krause Publications, is one of the newest debutantes poised to make a splash with their inaugural series of auctions that include an impressive assortment of vintage cards and collectibles.
Highlighting the lot is a complete set of 1898-1899 National Copper Plate Portraits. According to auction director Steve Bledlow, adding this 50 card set to a collection is a one of a kind opportunity. "It's rare enough to find one or two of these Copper Plate Portraits or even a handful at auction, but this is the first time that a complete set has ever been offered."
Thusfar collectors seem to agree, as the opening bid of $25,000 has already been met. Included in the set, are portraits of Hall of Famers Honus Wagner, "Wee" Willie Keeler, Cap Anson, and Wilbert Robinson.
Looking for vintage wax? Full boxes of 1979-80 Topps (Gretzky's RC year), 1972-73 Topps Basketball (Dr. J's RC year) and the very rare, condition sensitive 1973 Topps Series 4 Baseball wax boxes are all available.
Other intriguing items include an American flag signed by the gold medal-winning 1980 U.S. hockey team, an autographed baseball from Babe Ruth signed during his time in the Western League, an signed sepia photograph by Jack Johnson, the boxer not the singer, and several other rare autographed pieces.
Collect.com is making an aggressive splash in the auction market through aggressive and widespread marketing. The site already boasts a viewership of over 92,000 collectors daily and have advertised in dozens of written and online publications. This first batch of auctions is set to conclude on Thursday June 18th.
Collect.com doesn't have the exposure or inventory that the world's largest online marketplace boasts, what they do have is an intriguing assortment of one of a kind items that tickles the fancy of any memorabilia collector.
As for me and my money, this little item may cause us to part ways.
