Update: 2012 National Hockey Card Day Coming to USA and Canada

For the first time, Upper Deck will be bringing National Hockey Card Day to the United States in 2012. Canadians don't need to worry, though. It's sticking around in the Great White North as well. Taking place on Saturday, February 11th, collectors will be able to get free packs of five cards from participating hobby shops. Upper Deck will also have an online component for National Hockey Card Day the first time.

Two different sets will be made specifically for the event, which precedes National Hockey Day in America on February 12th. One set will be exclusive to Canada, while the other will be offered only in American shops.

The American base set has 15 cards spread over three subsets: Stars in Stripes, American Legends and America's Teams. A special 16th card of Bruins goaltender, Tim Thomas, will be available with purchase. A limited number of autographs will also be inserted.

Canadian collectors will find a similar 15-card set. The subsets are Rookies, Pride of Canada and Heroes. A Sidney Crosby Team Canada card will be offered as a gift to those making purchases. Canadian retailers London Drugs and Toys 'R Us will also be in on the action, offering over-sized cards.

Additional prizes will be given away through a special Facebook page.

Ryan's collecting origins began with winter bike rides to the corner store, tossing a couple of quarters onto the counter and peddling home with a couple packs of O-Pee-Chee hockey in his pocket. Today, he continues to build sets, go after inserts with cool technologies, chase Montreal Expos and finish off his John Jaha master collection. Ryan can be found on Twitter @tradercracks and Google+.

User Comments

  1. Are the Willie O’Ree, Zdeno Chara and Tim Thomas cards only available in the US or will they be available in Canada as well?

  2. The Canadian and US versions are completely different. I do suspect that most will be heavily traded across borders so collectors on both sides can complete master sets. The purchase incentive cards will likely be the trickiest to come by, but even then there should be lots.
