Hines Ward Wins “Dancing With the Stars,” Continuing Traditon of Athlete Winners

Hines Ward won the 12th edition of "Dancing With the Stars" beating out fellow celebrity finalists, Kirstie Alley and Chelsea Kane. The win by the current Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver marks the sixth time in 12 seasons that a former or current athlete has won the mirror ball trophy. Previous winners include Shawn Johnson (gymnastics), Kristi Yamaguchi (figure skating), Hélio Castroneves (IRL Racing), Emmitt Smith (NFL) and Apolo Anton Ohno (speed skating). Runner-up athletes include NFL stars Jerry Rice, Warren Sapp and Jason Taylor, as well as figure skater, Evan Lysacek.

While Ward is already one of the most-collected on the Steelers' roster, winning such a mainstream dancing contest as an active player may lead to further interest in his cards and memorabilia.

Ward has developed a reputation around the NFL for being a tough and, at times, dirty player in his 13 NFL seasons. The four-time All-Star has won two championships with the Steelers and was named the Super Bowl XL MVP.
