2009 Topps Chrome Football Review
The Good: 2009 Topps Chrome Football features more rookie cards and more refactors than ever before. The price tag is just as affordable as ever and the design is up to the high standards set by previous installments of the set.
The Bad: There's nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking about the set. Also the football stars inserts look cartoonish and out of place.
The Bottom Line: If it ain't broke don't fix it. The old saying rings true with 2009 Topps Chrome Football, which is more of a good thing. Add in the additional value and the reasonable price tag and Topps has a winner yet again in Topps Chrome Football.
Each of the following subgrades is out of a possible 10 points, with 10 being the best possible score and 1 being the worst possible score:
Design (8.1)
To Topps' credit, their 2009 card photography has been far superior to anything that Upper Deck or Panini has come up with. Considering the large following that Topps Chrome has, they could just as easily have mailed it in with this year's set. Lucky for us this is far from the case as 2009 Topps Chrome Football sports what I would consider the best photography of any Topps Chrome set in recent memory.
I don't like the design quite as much as last year set, but the silver metallic backdrop for 2009 Topps Chrome Football definitely gives the cards a sleek, crisp look.
Value (8)
Value has never been a problem for Topps Chrome, and 2009 Topps Chrome Football is no different. The 9 refractors, 10 inserts, 12 rookie cards, and 1 autographed rookie card per hobby box are more than enough to justify the price.
Checklist (8.5)
The base checklist features a whopping 110 rookies in the regular cast of NFL stars, with a few role players mixed in as well. The rookie autograph checklist is predictably strong, and provides plenty of opportunities for landing big hits.
Enjoyability (8.3)
Topps Chrome Football is one of my favorite perennial football products and 2009 Topps Chrome Football didn't disappoint. I liked the addition of the NFL cheerleaders as they proved very...collectible.
The abundance of different refractors was impressive, and the quality of the pulls was even better. I pulled refractor rookie cards of both Matthew Stafford and Chris Wells, a bronze refractor of Pat White, and a Superfractor of Shonn Greene. Add in an autographed rookie card of Donald Brown and you've got some serious 1st day draft talent packed into a single box.
Even better, this is the first time ever I pulled two autographs out of one box of Topps Chrome. While I doubt this is anything near the norm, it was a nice touch since I also pulled my first ever Superfractor from the box as well. Even without these two big unexpected hits the stores had a really good time breaking 2009 Topps Chrome Football.
