Dustin Ackley Set for MLB Debut June 17
Drafted second overall by the Seattle Mariners in the 2009 MLB draft, behind Stephen Strasburg, Dustin Ackley will make his big-league debut tonight. Ackley played first base and outfield at the University of North Carolina before being moved to second base when he signed with Seattle. Ackley struggled at the beginning of the 2011 season, but the prospect quickly heated up and the Mariners front office made the call.
The sure-handed seconded baseman will add some needed pop to the line up for Seattle. The overall talent that the 23-year old brings to Seattle is too much for the Mariners to ignore and now the team is forced to shuffle around Adam Kennedy and Chone Figgins to make room for him.
Ackley has posted significant numbers this season in the minors with a .303 batting average and .421 on base percentage. Sitting just half a game behind the Texas Rangers, the Mariners hope Ackley's offensive contributions will keep the team in the American League West hunt.
Ackley's debut will be in Seattle against Roy Oswalt of the Philadelphia Phillies as interleague play begins this weekend.
