Twin Brothers Face 25 Years In Prison For Alleged Sports Memorabilia Theft

Police in Rutland, VT have charged two twin brothers for allegedly breaking into a nearby home and stealing over $2,000 worth of sports memorabilia and an Ibanez SRX guitar valued at more then $500.

The 18 year old duo, Brandon & Cameron Lackey, are residents of Wallingford, VT.  The crime for which the brothers are being charged allegedly occurred August 22nd, when police say the tandem broke into a home in nearby West Rutland and committed the crime.  Among the sports memorabilia items stolen during the burglary were autographed photos of former MLB stars Whitey Ford, Frank Thomas and Paul O'Neill.

The Rutland Herald reports that both men have been formally charged with burglary and grand larceny, and could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Both Lackey brothers plead not guilty to all charges during their court appearance Monday.

Steiner / Cowboys Partnership Ensures Texas Stadium Lives On

Following their embarrassing 44 - 6 loss at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys disappointing 2008 season came to a screeching end. In addition to kissing their Super Bowl  hopes goodbye, the end of the 2008 seasons marked the end of an era for Cowboys fans and players who bid a fond farewell to Texas Stadium. While Cowboys fans wouldn't mind forgetting their team's underachieving 2008 season, many are eager to preserve their many fond (and not so fond) memories of Texas Stadium, the team's home since 1971.  Thanks to a recently announced agreement between Steiner Sports and the Cowboys, fans and collectors alike will have a great opportunity to do just that.

Cowboys-Steiner Collectibles, a division of Steiner Sports, has produced a new line of memorabilia products that pay tribute to the now defunct Texas Stadium.  Some the Texas Stadium themed memorabilia items being sold by Steiner include stadium seats, game used jerseys, game used helmets, locker room chairs, autographed seat bottoms, stadium photographs, and commemorative collages. One of these products, a Texas Stadium Collage commemorates the last Cowboys game ever played in Texas Stadium on December 20th.  The farewell game resulted in a 33-24 Cowboys loss against the visiting Baltimore Ravens.

Two unique versions of the framed ticket collage will be produced to pay tribute to the game. One collage will feature a Final Game commemorative ticket, a 4"x6" photo from the final game, and a descriptive nameplate. The commemorative ticket displays the date Texas Stadium opened, 10-24-71, in the section, row, and seat part of the ticket.

The second version of the collage will feature this commemorative Cowboys ticket, two 5"x7" photos from the final game, the descriptive nameplate, and turf from the field at Texas Stadium. Each item comes with a Cowboys-Steiner letter of authenticity.

Additionally, fans who attended the final game have the option of sending their ticket stubs to Steiner, who will frame them in either of the aforementioned styles. be framed up in either style.  These framed pieces will be ready to ship out to customers by late January 2009.

Alternatively, fans will have an opportunity to purchase Texas Stadium Memorabilia at a live auction of remaining memorabilia on February 20 at Texas Stadium. After that, TxDOT will pay the city of Irving $15 million to use the site for seven years while it works to build a high-five type reconstruction on the triple freeway interchange.

As for the fate of the stadium itself, the city plans to either blow it up or tear it down in 2010. But, there are still other options. Movie producers are still thinking about paying the city to film the destruction. There is also a chance one developer will actually save the building and put a ski resort inside.

Upper Deck Announces “Legends of Sport”

Upper Deck has announced the production of an extremely limited edition sports memorabilia product which features autographs from 3 of the most legendary names in sports history - Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Muhammad Ali.  Upper Deck created the triple signed montage, which is aptly named “Legends of Sport”,  using a combination of premium archival paper and high quality images.

All 3 athletes are household names that are well known throughout the world.  Tiger Woods has earned 14 PGA  majors, with many years still remaining in career.  Muhammad Ali, the former heavyweight champion of the world, won 56 professional bouts during his storied career in the ring.  Oh, and then there is that Jordan guy, who racked up 6 NBA championship rings, along with 6 NBA Finals MVP awards during his legendary NBA Career.

Tim Muret, Vice President of UDA, had this to say about his company's newest memorabilia product line, "We knew we had something special in the making as we planned this rare piece.  Not only have Ali, Jordan and Tiger never appeared together on signed artwork before, which makes this piece extraordinary, but the wow factor when you see the item up close just takes your breath away. It’s an investment piece that is sure to appreciate.”

The great looking 57” x 34” framed montage is highlighted in gold and shows each of the talented athletes in action, flanked by ghosted-back images of their faces. Ali is shown stalking an opponent circa 1975; Jordan is caught in mid-flight on his way to the basket in the 1990s; and Woods is captured launching yet another beautiful drive. Each member of the lendendary tandem has signed the thick-stock, archival P-velvet paper in black paint pen just beneath their respective action photos. The autographs are accompanied by  and their signatures have been deemed genuine via UDA’s patented five-step authentication process. The production run for the piece is capped at 500.

“I’m excited to be involved in this, especially with these two amazing men, who have transcended their sport to become cultural icons,” said Ali.

Jordan chimed in, “I am thrilled to be included in this historic piece with Muhammad Ali and Tiger Woods.I  admire them both for their achievements in their sports and as people.”

Drunk Lennon Recording Sold At Los Angeles Memorabilia Auction

The London Telegraph reported Monday that a cassette containing a song recording made by a drunk John Lennon was sold over the weekend for more then $35,000.  The item was sold at a Memorabilia Auction in Los Angeles.

The cassette, which has never been publicly aired, features Lennon singing the 1957 Lloyd Price track Just Because. Lennonheard substituting the song's original words with "debauched lyrics" of his own, according to Bonhams & Butterfields, the auction house.

The recording was made in 1973 during a notoriously drunken phase of the musician's life after he had left his wife Yoko Ono. Lennon later referred to this 18 month drinking bingeperiod, in which he moved from New York to Los Angeles, as his "lost weekend".

Bonhams & Butterfields described Lennon as being "drunk" during the making of the tape and listed some of his alternate lyrics in the rendition.  The singer's warblings include: "I wanna take all them new singers, Carol and the other one with the nipples, I wanna take 'em and hold 'em tight."  In another line, Lennon chirps: "Just a little cocaine will set me right."  The recording lasts six minutes before someone is heard calling the session to an end.

The auction has facilitated the sale of a hand written letter from actress Marilyn Monroe to New York Yankee Legend Joe DiMaggio, which sold for $35,000.  Another notable item sold at the auction was Monroe's Department of Defence ID card, which commanded a whopping $55,000.

Judge Sends Stolen O.J. Simpson Memorabilia to the Auction Block

Judge Jackie Glass, the same judge who recently sentenced O.J. Simpson to 9 - 33 years in prison, has ordered the immediate sale all of the footballs, pictures and other memorabilia that was collected as evidence during Simpson's Las Vegas Trial.  Simpson's memorabilia will be shipped to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office where it will be sold via public auction. The memorabilia will be sold in an attempt to satisfy some of the $33.5 million wrongful death settlement that Simpson owes the to Ron Goldman's family.

Glass, who sentenced Simpson to nine to 33 years in prison, also ordered all co-defendants to pay $3,650 in restitution to one of the victims, memorabilia dealer Bruce Fromong.

Fromong sought more than $100,000 for property loss and medical bills resulting from the September 2007 armed robbery at the Palace Station Casino Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Late last week, a judge in Santa Monica, California, ordered another of the victims, memorabilia dealer Alfred Beardsley, to turn over Simpson's Hall of Fame ring. Beardsley said he didn't have it, denying allegations that Simpson had given him the ring in exchange for favorable testimony at the Las Vegas trial. He said Simpson told him he lost the ring on a golf course 12 years ago. Experts estimate the value of the ring to be as high as $200,000.

David Cook, attorney to the Goldman family, wants to forgo the Sheriff's Auction in favor of selling the valuable football memorabilia on eBay. Cook told CNN, “Sheriff's sales are traditionally distress sales, to be very polite. We are going to try to obtain an order from the court to authorize this stuff with evidence stickers attached (to be sold) on eBay, America's yard sale.”

Just Minors Announces Strategic Partnership With Razor Entertainment

Just Minors announced late Thursday Afternoon that they have formed a strategic partnership with fellow Baseball Card Manufacturer, Razor Entertainment.  The agreement will allow Just Minors to distribute Razor Baseball Card Products via their website on both a retail and a wholesale basis.  As part of the agreement with Razor, Just Minors will phase out new product operations following the release of Mystery Jerseys 2009 in order to focus on sales and support of existing inventory, as well as on the sales and development of Razor products.  Just Minors has not merged with Razor and is still an independent, privately owned company.

While this agreement will likely spell the end of the road for Just Minors branded products, there is still a chance that the Just Minors brand will live on.  As part of the agreement between Razor and Just Minors,  Just Minors branded products can be initiated by Razor.  It is entirely possible that there will be a Just Autographs release in 2009 - though this would be initiated by Razor instead of Just Minors.

The first ever Razor baseball product, 2008 Razor Signature Series, is currently being sold by Just Minors in 2 available configurations:

  1. 2008 Razor Signature Series Hobby Boxes - 10 packs per Box.  One guaranteed autographed card per pack.
  2. 2008 Razor Signature Series Silver Collector's Set -  Each set contains 100 base silver cards, and no insert cards or autograph cards. This is a Just Minors exclusive product that boasts a low gloss finish, perfect for autograph collectors.

Newspaper Holds Sports Memorabilia Auction to Raise Money For Children in Need

It was apt that in a roomful of sports memorabilia and food Thursday, Santa got the most applause during this season of giving.

Mr Claus made a surprise guest appearance at the Sports Memorabilia Auction, shaking hands and waving to more than 100 people inside the Gold Eagle Restaurant at the Laurel House in Dayville.

But it was the reason for the event that had most people smiling as organizers worked to raise $15,000 to benefit The Norwich Bulletin’s Tommy Toy Fund, which provides gifts to needy children in the region.

Browsers moved past tables full of baseball cards, autographed sports equipment, photos and gift certificates all either auctioned or raffled off for charity Thursday.

Special guests dotted the room, including boxer Peter Manfredo Jr., of the reality show “The Contender,” who toted in a pair of autographed red boxing gloves as part of the event’s first live auction. A few feet away, former Boston Red Sox All-Star catcher Rich Gedman dug into a plate of hors d’oeuvres, while residents milled past.

“The children come first,” former police chief Edward Perron of Putnam said. “There’s a lot of families in need out there.”

Two of the top sellers at the auction were four Red Sox box seats and a limousine ride to Fenway Park that went for $1,000 and the Manfredo boxing gloves, which went for $375 each.
