Harper Anniversary Auto Highlights Early Sales From 2010 Bowman Sterling

Since releasing on Tuesday, 2010 Bowman Sterling has been on fire on eBay, with Bryce Harper's 60th Anniversary Auto fetching an astounding $1,2000. The Harper Auto marks the first recorded sale of one of Topps' year long 60th Anniversary Autographs, which will be seeded in various upcoming 2011 Topps products, with each carrying a print run of 60.

Outside of the Harper, Stephen Strasburg dominated the Top 50 early sales, grabbing a total of 28 spots. I would personally steer clear of the Strasburg Base Auto Redemption, as there's an insane number of them on eBay. Remember the '89 Griffey rule - If everyone has a card, then that card won't be as valuable as everyone thought it would be. If you must have a Bowman Sterling Strasburg, please refractor up, as that carries a print run you can live with. I would really like to see Topps number every autograph so we know where we stand.

If you prefer Heyward over Strasburg as I do, his autos are going for dirt cheap when compared to Strasburg's. Twins rookie Danny Valencia's first ever autographed baseball card makes 3 appearances in the top 50. It will be interesting to see if Bowman Sterling can keep up it's current momentum, but for the time being Sterling is definitely selling extremely well from top to bottom on eBay. Below is a look at the top 50 cards sales from 2010 Bowman Sterling since it's release.

  1. Why are Strasburg’s base auto redemptions selling for so much?? I mean…just why? I was kind of hoping to see people NOT freak out over the Bryce Harper cards because of Strasburg (which in turn would see a downturn in Strasburg cards), but I’m not seeing it….Topps’s PR people are dancing in the streets over next year’s product for when they start making dual Strasburg/Harper, well anything!

  2. @David Tenneson: Strasburg is an absolute mystery to me, it’s almost like people refuse to let go and come to grips with the fact that he had Tommy John surgery and might not live up to hype. Even without the injury, it would have been near impossible for him to live up to the hype. I thought for sure Jason Heyward would reclaim his front runner status after the Strasburg injury. Heyward is seriously the next truley great player.

  3. I agree 100%. The only thing I can think of that would make this whole thing make sense, is that a majority of the people feel they are going to be the “smart ones” and buy up all of the Strasburg stuff for cheap while he’s hurt. Normally that WOULD be smart, but when everybody has the same good idea you get the 7am traffic jam instead of the 8am jam! I really hope it doesn’t turn out this way (mostly because I’m not sure how much Strasburg being a bust would hurt the hobby), but the only way this all might die down is if he suffers another major injury in the next 5 years.

  4. Just picked up a Danny Valencia Bowman Sterling Refractor auto #’d to 199 for $39.00 buy it now after seeing your email newsletter.

  5. @David Tenneson: The biggest problem is that he was litterally selling at 600%-700% value and now he’s selling for at least 200%-400% value. Either there are a ton of hardcore Nationals fans out there who are willing to support Strasburg to the death or there are a lot of people making insanely poor investments. I would assume it will slow down once the 2011 MLB Season starts, but as you said, Bryce Harper is Topps new pitchman for 2011. Like I did with Strasburg, buying Harper cards won’t even be on my radar. Harper will probably hit 600%-700% as well. I’ll gladly pay 1/10th the price for guys like Trout and Sano, who I like more than Harper anyways.

  6. @Jeff: Nice, can’t go wrong with a Valencia numbered refractor auto!

  7. On a random side note, I picked up a pair of Buy it Now’s that I thought were great deals earlier today. The first being a Bryce Brentz Bowman Draft Refractor Auto for $16 with Free Shipping and the second a 2010 Topps USA Jackie Bradley Jr. Triple Patch Auto for $29.99.

  8. Nice pickups guys.

Random question….got my $25 Bubba Starling USA blue auto, and the print on the card (actual card print not auto) looks kind of funny/blurry. Should I be worried about somebody taking the time to fake these or do these cards just look like that?

  9. Nice, i’ll have to look into those, what do you think about picking up a Bryce Harper USA Bowman Chrome non auto card, local shop has one for 45.00, i don’t have any of his cards yet. I do like to snatch up deals out there while everyone else is distracted by Strasburg though, let em keep at it, i’ll get better cards!

  10. Looking at some Bryce Brentz cards, do you think the 09 UD USA by the letter auto’s are worth picking up if its cheap or would going with a ’10 product like a Sterling auto be better?

  11. @Jeff: In complete honesty, I wouldn’t pay $15 for the Bowman Chrome Harper. There was too many of them made and Harper is starting to sell for 200%-300% value. I would buy into guys like Mike Trout, Miguel Sano and Manny Machado instead, all of which can be had for 1/5-1/10 the cost.

  12. @David Tenneson: I would send Topps customer service a scan and also compare it to similar cards on eBay.

  13. Thanks for the advice, ive been more into football and hockey lately and i’m still learning the baseball names to look for.

  14. @Jeff: I would go with his 2010 Bowman Chrome Draft Auto or 2010 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Auto. Especially a refractor version of his 2010 Bowman Chrome Draft Auto.

  15. Alright, i don’t usually buy cards in the 50 dollar range, i have a choice of the Bryce Brentz Donruss elite status version #’d to 25 or a Bowman Chrome Draft blue ref. Both are priced about the same, what would you buy?
Also while i’m at it, how about other guys like Stanton, Chapman, Castro, Santana auto’s? Worth getting?

  16. @Jeff: I would go with Bowman Chrome Draft Blue. All those guys you named are worth getting, just make sure to wait for the right price to come along.

  17. @Brett J. Lewis: I just went through my Topps USA Baseball Autos and an AJ Vanegas Auto looks blurry, and I opened the box so I think it’s safe to assume your Starling is authentic.

  18. Thanks, Brett. You think if this guy ends up like Castro, Chapman, Machado, etc… that this USA auto will jump much, or are most people more concerned with the Bowman 1st cards rather than the older USA cards?

  19. Just won a Bryce Brentz Bowman Chrome Draft Refractor auto for $14.01 thanks for your help!

  20. @David Tenneson: Once he’s drafted in June, it will go up substantially in value. Seeing as how it Topps’ first USA set, there should be some definant value even when his first Bowman Chrome Auto comes out, which will likely be in 2011 Bowman Draft. He’s one of the more intriguing players that could be in the draft due to he’s a three sport star that could play Division I Football or Basketball. As far as various 2010 USA Autos, the #1 will end up being the blue bordered ones that came out of 2010 Topps Chrome followed by the Topps USA Autos.

  21. Yeah, since I read about him in your article, l’ve seen his name pop up more and more (granted that’s probably because I’ve started listening) but he’s probably going to be a star in SOME sport. As much fun as it would be to see him shake things up at Nebraska, i’d like to see him go in the first round to a team that could bring him up quickly, make him a star, then trade him for top dollar to the Phillies (yes I’m looking at you Royals!). Can you imagine a seasoned Dom Brown and Starling in the same outfield? Talk about top young talent!

  22. Hate to keep asking you advice, i really appreciate it, do you think a Mike Trout Bowman Sterling auto, non refractor but BGS graded 9 would be a good investment for around $50 ?

  23. @Jeff: I personally would stick to Trout’s Bowman Chrome Auto or Donruss Elite Status or Aspirations Autos.
