10 Cool Scottie Pippen Cards to Add to Your Collection

Scottie Pippen is normally painted as the sidekick to Michael Jordan, but he was a star in his own right. Although he does not get the same reverence as MJ, collectors have realized the significance that the Hall of Fame small forward offered the Chicago Bulls' 1990's dynasty. Scottie Pippen's excellent career and the rabid fanbase for Bulls' players ensures that his cards and autographs will always maintain good values.

Born in Arkansas, Pippen stayed in-state for college, attending Central Arkansas. After growing nearly seven inches while in school, the NBA came calling. Scottie Pippen was selected fifth overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1987 NBA Draft, and was quickly dealt to Chicago.

Scottie Pippen's time in Chicago involved six NBA titles, two Michael Jordan retirements, and plenty of fanfare. After Jordan retired the second time in 1998, Pippen left Chicago to play for Houston and Portland before rejoining the Bulls for one last season in 2003-04. A seven-time NBA All-Star and eight-time All-Defensive First Team, Scottie Pippen was named the NBA All-Star MVP in 1994. He was also part of the 1992 and 1996 gold medal Olympic teams. Scottie Pippen was named a member of the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team and joined the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Given the collecting landscape when Scottie Pippen was in the NBA, there is no shortage of basketball cards for the former great. Autographs are not in great supply, but his signed cards have been included in plenty of Panini and Leaf products during the last few years.

The following list takes a look at ten Scottie Pippen cards that would make a good addition to any collection. It covers a few high-end options, as well as budget and mid-level cards.

1987-88 Entenmann's Chicago Bulls Scottie Pippen

Although it is very unlikely that a card produced by Entenmann's would make any top card lists, this card has special significance. Since Pippen was not included in a basketball product until his second season, this stadium giveaway is the first professional card to depict Scottie Pippen. The slightly oversized card checks in at 2-5/8" x 4" and was part of an 11-card set given away at a Chicago Bulls' home game. The cards feature blank backs and are not numbered. Prices are reasonable for this oddball card and another set, including Pippen, was issued in 1988-89. Both sets include cards for Michael Jordan.

1988-89 Fleer Scottie Pippen RC #20

Still an underappreciated rookie card, 1988-89 Fleer is home to the only Scottie Pippen rookie card. Fleer actually misspelled Pippen as "Pippin" on the back, but the error has not increased values and the card remains very affordable.

1988-89 Panini Stickers Spanish Scottie Pippen #77

While many collectors view the Fleer card as the only Scottie Pippen rookie, another NBA product was released by Panini for the 1988-89 season. The sticker set features only Spanish text on the back, along with a posed photo of Pippen on the front.

1993-94 Finest Scottie Pippen #208

Wild colors and a glossy finish normally make for an interesting look. When you combine that with the first edition of Finest basketball, this Scottie Pippen card offers an intriguing budget option. Refractor parallels provide an increase in value. Pippen also has a subset card featuring a brick background.

1996-97 Skybox Premium Autographics Scottie Pippen

Still popular after all these years, Scottie Pippen's first Autographics card is even more valuable due to his general lack of signed cards. The on-card autograph for Pippen is only signed in blue ink and there are counterfeits associated with this card and many others from the set.

1996-97 Z-Force Big Men on Court Scottie Pippen #9

The bubble letters and elaborate die-cut have made these BMOC a collecting favorite for years. This rare Pippen card does not surface often.

1997-98 E-X2001 Jamabalaya Scottie Pippen #14

A timeless insert set that plays on the dunk-sounding name of the Creole dish, Scottie Pippen's Jambalaya card is very rare and values back that up.

1997-98 Ultra Court Masters Scottie Pippen #14CM

Another rare insert from the same year, the Court Masters card features a quality design and dual images of Pippen. These premium cards can be found ungraded for a budget price.

1998-99 Skybox Thunder Noyz Boyz Scottie Pippen #12

The Noyz Boyz inserts exhibit one of the most distinct looks from the period and is another late-1990's insert with tough odds. Prices are a little higher for this limited insert.

2012-13 Panini Flawless Greats Scottie Pippen #9 Autographed Dual Patch #/20

Fast-forward to the present day, Flawless was one of the biggest products of the 2012-13 season. This appealing Scottie Pippen card combines dual patch pieces, an on-card signature and limited print run to make one impressive card.

  1. You show Scottie Pippen’s rookie Fleer card as 1988-1989 #20. I have the same Fleer card (on the face) and #20 of 132 on the back. But on the back it say 1987-1988. Can you tell me what I am missing? Thanks
    Roy

  2. Roy Freeman » Well, it shows the stats for 1987-88 on the back, if that is what you are referring to. The print date is 1988. Pippen’s actual rookie season was in 1987-88, but his rookie card was not issued until the following season.
