Shaking things up slightly, 2016-17 SP Authentic Hockey changes the 15-16 formula from three guaranteed autographs per box down to two. However, there is still a chance at the third signed card plus the new format results in a lower box price.

With 100 cards in the main set, 2016-17 SP Authentic Hockey immediately adds to the hits via Base Autographs (1:216 packs) and Limited Autograph Materials (#/50 or less). Of course, the base set is supplemented with hobby favorites—Future Watch (#/999) rookie cards. Available in both base and autographed versions, the signed rookies can also be found with limited Inscription Variations (#/50) that come out of the total 999 print run.

New Spectrum editions (1-2 per box), featuring Spectrum Light FX technology, apply to both the base and Future Watch cards. Base versions average 1:18 packs and the FW parallels are split between Level 1 (1:36 packs), Level 2 (1:108 packs) and Level 3 (1:576 packs).

The Authentic Moments set (1:5 packs) is another returning favorite for 2016-17 SP Authentic Hockey and is joined by Silver Skates (1:6 packs). Both come in Gold (#/99) as well as signed parallels: Authentic Moments Autographs (1:1,440 packs) and Silver Skates Autographs (Veteran #/10, Rookie #/25).

A staple of the SPA brand, the Sign of the Times insert is broken into Tier 1 (1:120 packs) or Tier 2 (1:2,304 packs) rarity along with Rookies (#/199, #/99, or #/35). The SOTT line also adds multi-player autographs with Duals (#/25), Trios (#/15), Quads (#/10), Sixes (#/6) and Eights (#/5).

Other signed inserts to be found in 2016-17 SP Authentic Hockey include Global Chirography (1:576 packs), Great White North (1:576 packs), Immortal Inks (#/10) and Marks of Distinction (#/25).

Finally, as in past years, collectors are treated to additional cards intended to build on earlier 16-17 sets like the flagship Upper Deck Hockey product. This means Upper Deck Update cards for Base (1:5 packs), Young Guns (1:13 packs) and new Season Highlights (1:26 packs). Parallels include Exclusives (#/100) and High Gloss (#/10).

  1. What is Upper Deck thinking!! Of all the brands to make a change, this isn’t one that needed it. so, price remains over $100 a box but now 2 autos instead of 3?

  2. And down two packs to 18 from 20 why?

  3. So it was $40 per auto and now it’s $50 per auto? That’s a GOOD thing???

  4. If they are going to put out only 2 autos and 18 packs than get rid of the update cards for the series 2 and put in the retro cards.

  5. Was going to try to put the Legends Gold Autographed 30 card set together, found out that four players did not even sign!!!. B.Salming,Glenn Hall,Bobby Hull,Curtis Joseph Did not sign. Was a big fan of this product,Upperdick What the #%@*!!!

  6. I would give this Zero Stars if I could. Absolutley unacceptable to be guaranteed only two autos. And seriously, who cares about inscriptions? So what if it has a date or “go oilers.” I didn’t see retro listed, I liked those mini sets.
Avoid like the plague as a message to Upper Deck to stop ripping us off by charging more and giving less. There should be at least 2 Future Watch Autos in a box, with a 3rd of something else.
As for retros, why not do reprint sets of some of the best cards like Crosby 05-06 FW and Patch with reprint autos?
And I agree, get rid of the UD Update cards, unless they are a double hit in packs.

I’m disgusted…SP Authentic has always been my favorite set. I doubt I will buy any boxes or packs this year.

  7. Like others have mentioned. It is totally unacceptable to not guarantee 3 autos and as the person above me wrote, 2 of them should be Future Watch autos. Enough with the over produced Sign of the Times.

  8. Sucks that they don’t package future watch separately making it that much more harder to get them (especially the autos). Hoping for good products in the Upper Deck Update as rookie cards are all I’m interested in. Was considering adding Future Watch sets but not about to pay through the roof for boxes and a chance that I get one or two uniques in every box.

  9. Upper Deck continues to ruin the hobby. Less autographs at a similar price as past years is absurd. 90% of the future watch autos will fetch ~$10 or less on the secondary market. Last year’s version had 3 autos and was only about $10 more when it debuted, so they just jacked up the prices of that box to justify the price on this one. And oh yeah, I’ve still been waiting years for the last 3 redemptions I had, including over 3 months on the one I replaced, so any redemptions will probably serve as good coasters.
