2014 Topps MLS soccer cards strive for a balance between being a somewhat comprehensive release aimed at set builders while offering a lot of hits. Hobby boxes come with three autographs and three memorabilia cards.

The 2014 Topps MLS base set has a total of 200 cards. Split between the league's 19 teams, it's not the deepest checklist possible but it is fairly expansive. The set also has additional short prints making things more challenging. Parallels include Blue (#/50), Gold (#/25), Black (#/10), Brazilian (#/5), Printing Plates and Golazo (1/1).

Like the 2013 set, MLS Maestros lead the autograph content. Focusing on the league's bigger stars, the cards use sticker autographs. Icons Autographs include standouts from the past like Alexi Lalas and Cobi Jones. Both sets have have five parallels: Gold (#/25), Black (#/10), Red (#/10), Brazilian (#/5) and Golazo (1/1). Red and Golazo are hobby exclusives. 24 Under 24 Die-Cut Autographs is a new set that spotlights the best young players.

MLS Kits include swatches of game-used memorabilia in them. They have six levels of parallels, none of which are numbered to more than 49. These include one-of-one cards with letter relics and over-sized patches.

Autographed Relics have a slightly altered Kits design. They also have a similar number of parallels, although with different numbering. Autographed Relic parallels are numbered to 75 or less.

2014 Topps MLS has four basic insert sets as well. Generation Adidas spotlights top players who have participated in the Generation Adidas program. World's Stage brings a little international flavor while Topps Minis and 1976-77 English Footballers bring the retro vibe. English Footballers and World's Stage both have autographed versions numbered to 25.

A late addition to the set, 2014 Topps MLS has official cards of the Mexican National Team. Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Giovani dos Santos and eight others will be included in the set ahead of their appearance in the 2014 World Cup.

Product Review

2014 Topps MLS Soccer Product Review

Reviewed by Trey Treutel

Good: Plenty of parallels, interesting card back information, jumbo relics are back and still popular, three autographs and three relics per box.

Bad: Weaker autograph checklist, all autographs are stickers, no 2014 MLS SuperDraft rookies.

The Bottom Line: 2014 Topps MLS comes across like a rough draft. The pieces are there for something good, but it ultimately does not deliver, especially when you account for the $100+ price tag.

Staff Rating:
2.4 / 5.0

Card Design: 2.5/5.0

Fundamentally, the base design is not much different from 2013 Topps MLS. While the previous product had a straight banner and logo, 2014 Topps MLS goes with a rounded paint streak composed of team colors. It gives it a more childish look, but is not a huge issue. The silver foil used to display the names in 2013 has been replaced by a plain white font. This was a great update as the info is much easier to read.

The base card backs offer a nice change of pace. Instead of the normal card back with a few stats and blurb about the player, Topps displays advanced statistics from BSports Stats Insights. This includes information like “Tackle Win Rate” and “Clearance Breakdown” percentages for defenders, a shot and goal graphic for offensive players, and a similar graphic for goalkeepers that displays shots and goals allowed, including a detailed breakdown of where each goal was scored. With the increasing prevalence of mainstream advanced stats, this is a terrific addition.

Although the parallels are more plentiful, one thing that caught my attention was the serial numbering. Like last year, Topps utilized a printed number for base parallels, instead of the more-traditional stamping process. The key difference is that this time it was a printing quality reminiscent of a grocery receipt. On top of that, many of the parallels I pulled featured ink smudges on the serial numbering due to the inferior printing. Unfortunately, the same system was used to number the autograph and relic parallels, which marks a change from last year when hit parallels had stamped serial numbering.

From a design perspective, parallels are much easier to spot and make for a noticeable improvement over last year. The retro English Footballers insert set again displays a clean and classic look and may eventually warrant a standalone product. Lastly, several largely unremarkable inserts round out the product, including another mini version, heavy on black.

Checklist: 2.0/5.0

The checklist is where some of the bigger holes emerge. First, 2014 rookies are not included this year. The 190-card base set seems like an odd number and it makes you wonder if space was left for 2014 SuperDraft players. Given that the draft was in January and the product included rookie cards and autographs last year, this seems like a very bizarre omission. However, the 190-card base set makes it possible to complete the base set in one box, and very likely to do so in two.

I struggle to understand the inclusion of the Mexican National Team insert cards. Yes, the Mexican National Team includes a strong group of players and the country resides just south of the MLS region. The MLS also includes many fans and players of Mexican descent. However, none of the ten players included in the set play in the MLS. In fact, the entire Mexican National Team plays for Mexican clubs or in Europe. In the context of the product, it does not make sense and seems like a forced insert designed solely to help sales in a World Cup year. Also, I am not sure why Topps included “CONGRATULATIONS” on the back of a card that falls every other pack.

Short prints are back, but in a much more subdued amount. With only five short prints and 1:168 odds, there is not a lot to work with. Although I did not pull any variations, the All-Star theme is clear and fairly easy to distinguish from the base version.

Finally, there is the autograph checklist. Greatly reduced from last year, the autograph checklist has limited depth and very few current star options. Icons Autographs features former MLS greats like Alexi Lalas and Cobi Jones, as well as top players that no longer play in the MLS, like Tim Howard and Brad Guzan. Clint Dempsey is the biggest star among the autograph options and Landon Donavon is out because he is an Upper Deck exclusive. I know they were signed late in the offseason, but Michael Bradley and Jermain Defoe would have made for great additions. Time constraints may be to blame for not including autographs for the new Toronto FC stars, but where is Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane, Tim Cahill, Mike Magee or the 2014 MLS SuperDraft picks?

Value: 2.0/5.0

Even with six hits, the value for 2014 Topps MLS is limited based on the price. We are beyond the point where guaranteed hits automatically equals value. The only relics that have noticeable value are the jumbo pieces. Other than Dempsey and low-numbered parallels, none of the autographs are really huge hits either and no current rookies means that a normal value opportunity that is available in almost any sports product is squandered. Several player do make their cardboard debut, but are not rookies in 2014.

The larger number of colorful parallels does give the value a slight boost. Although short print variations also add something, the limited number and tough odds have softened the market. Short prints only work if people care. And despite each only falling about one per box, the Supporters and Generation Adidas inserts add nothing.

If you are looking at things strictly based on ROI, you are better off steering clear of boxes completely, looking at blasters, or waiting until the hobby box price drops in half.

The Fun Factor: 3.5/5.0

As the second MLS release from Topps since they gained the license, I expected noticeable improvements and instead saw a step back. That does not mean that the product was a bad break in terms of enjoyment. A variety of inserts, multiple color parallels and six hits offer an exciting opportunity for MLS collectors. Hopefully Topps can get the product back on track in 2015.

  1. I decided to grab a Blaster box today because there was none of the Topps Heritage blasters that I went in for. I had pretty good luck in finding a purple auto relic #ed to 75, and a black relic numbered to #ed to 15. I am trying to find more info on which cards are short printed. Fun product to rip open, and perceived as a much better value for $19.99 than paying over $100 for a hobby box if you are looking for hits and not aspiring to build a set. You are guaranteed one autograph per blaster box, although some of the colored and other parallels are probably easier to find in the hobby boxes.

  2. Great product! I love the auto relics, but I have a question, I pulled a patrice Bernier black relic numbered to /15 what is this?

  4. I love this product!! Great bang for your buck. Your information is incorrect about the maestros auro brazillian numbered to 5 hobby only. I bought a blaster box and pulled a donovan ricketts maesteo auto numbered 1/5

  5. Really loving what Topps has done with the MLS line! Got my first 2014 hobby and I’m loving it. Just found out about the SP variants, going to take some time to get used to all the SP and parallel decks but it is definitely a better product than what upper deck has put out in the past!

  6. This set is missing the 2014 mls super draft rookies???

  7. I like the fact that the colored parallels are betting distinguished, but with the lack of stars autos and superdraft autos, it seems like they are gearing this season towards the august release of topps chrome which is auto only. I think the above rating is spot on, the hobby boxes are not worth the price and should be a lot less. Topps is terrible at holding card value. Also for autograph seekers, the very high gloss on this years cards makes it difficult to hold the ink. I really wish upper deck hung on to MLS

  8. Since 2007 I have purchased a Hobby box for my son. We have had complete sets up until this year…. we are 32 cards shy. However, we did pull 3 relics, 1 jumbo relic, 1 autograph relic and 2 autographs. Now searching for complete sets…. or at least cards to finish ours out.

All the parallels are nice, along with all the other inserts…. but I personally think it’s too much. Takes away from completing a set.

  9. I have purchased four blaster boxes of this product and I have been very pleased. In the last box I pulled an autograph Clint Dempsey /25! However, all autographs are stickers which is a let down.

I am also a fan of the inserts. The 1977 English Footballers set has a really sweet look.
