The King of Jersey Sales, LeBron James Tops 2013 NBA List
Adding to his lengthy list of accolades, LeBron James is now the global king of NBA jersey sales. The back-to-back NBA champion, Finals MVP and regular season MVP had ceded the top jersey honor to Derrick Rose in 2012. LeBron James had the top-selling jersey in 2011.
Bucking the villain role he embraced following his move to Miami from Cleveland, James has seen his group of supporters grow rapidly. Upon hearing the news that he topped the list of jersey sales, James said, "To know that so many people look up to me, so many kids, that's what means more than anything, that I continue to inspire the youth and they look at me as a role model." He further added, "I understand, when you wear someone's jersey, you actually like believe in them. You believe they can do supernatural things. It's like an extension of our family and I really appreciate that."
The top jerseys for global and domestic sales include the same four elite players, with Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Durant, in addition to LeBron James. Although Derrick Rose missed the entire 2012-13 season, he still was the top-seller in China, Latin America and Europe.
Coming as no surprise, the majority of the top jerseys are from the same core group of teams. The Miami Heat (2), Los Angeles Lakers (3), Los Angeles Clippers (2), Oklahoma City Thunder (2), Brooklyn Nets (2), and Boston Celtics (2) have multiple players on the global list. The list of top sales for the United States basically mirrors the global list, except that Carmelo Anthony holds the fifth spot and Dwyane Wade occupies the sixth spot in US sales, and it is reversed for world sales.
The rankings are based on sales numbers from Adidas during the 2012-13 season. Adidas is the exclusive provider of official NBA jerseys. View the list for top jersey sales during the 2011-12 NBA season here.
