User Rating:

2012 Topps Prime Football is aimed at those looking for rookie hits. With an autographed relic, autograph and two relics in every hobby box, collectors can chase premium inserts from all the top rookies in this year's draft.

The 150-card 2012 Topps Prime base set includes 100 veterans and 50 rookie cards, which are inserted one per pack. Card fronts have a full-bleed design. Inserted one per pack, Copper parallels are numbered to 350. Other parallels include Gold (#/250), Silver Rainbow (#/99), Copper Rainbow (#/50) and Gold Rainbow (1/1).

Autograph Relics come in five different levels, all of which are serial numbered. Prime I, Prime II, Prime III and Prime IV are all book cards featuring different combinations of player-worn memorabilia. Numbered to a maximum of 15 copies, these book cards include jerseys, wristbands, gloves and footballs. Prime V, the most plentiful of the autographed relics, may not be book cards, but they still have four memorabilia pieces to go with a signature. Including parallels, there are six different versions of Prime V autographed relics. They are numbered to a maximum of 50 all the way down to 1/1. With a checklist of about 50 different players, the checklist is fairly deep, meaning not every hit is going to be a big one. However, with such a deep rookie class in 2012, there are lots of solid opportunities.

The came can be said for the Autographs. Like the Autograph Relics, they also fall one per box and are all serial numbered. Copper cards are the most abundant, numbered to 99. Four more levels of autographs are numbered in lesser quantities: Gold (#/75), Silver (#/50), Copper (#/25) and Gold Rainbow (1/1). Additional autographs from Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are included on Quarterback Autograph Continuity cards. These particular autographs are signed on-card.

Falling two per box, Relic Cards are highlighted by player-worn and player-used pieces. By using so many combinations are a large checklist, numbering for each card is kept low. Single-player relics, have up to four memorabilia pieces. Dual, Triple and Quad Combo Relics mix players. All relic cards have three versions: Copper (#/25), Silver Rainbow (#/10) and Gold Rainbow (1/1).

2012 Topps Prime Football also has two basic insert sets that combine to fall 1:5 packs. Primetimers (100 cards) showcases action photography. Primed Rookies (50 cards) focuses on 2012's first-year players.

Product Configuration: 10 packs per box, 6 cards per pack
Price Point: Mid-End Football Card
Target Audience: Rookie Collectors, Autograph Collectors, Memorabilia Card Collectors, Set Builders

2012 Topps Prime Football Product Review

Reviewed by Mike Cornwell

Good: Rookie-heavy product, thicker card stock (for hobby release), lots of autographed relic parallels, guarantee of two autographs and two relics per box, vibrant colors, cool book cards with up to six autographs and memorabilia swatches.

Bad: Many of the hits are from less desirable players, veterans are largely second-tier players, sticker autographs, redemptions, many relics are event-worn rather than game-used.

The Bottom Line: 2012 Topps Prime Football fills the needs of rookie seekers. However, if you're looking for veterans, you might want to look elsewhere. With only 60 total cards per box, it'll take multiple boxes to build a set. The parallels make this a fun set to put together and there is a chance to pull some pretty unique cards.

Staff Rating:
4.0 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.5/5.0

The cards from the 2012 Topps Prime Football hobby release are printed on thick card stock, which I love. Chipping and dings are less of a factor because of it. Sometimes it can be confusing to collectors since a certain product can look very identical year after year. The card design and colors differentiate it from last year's set.

The parallel cards are easy to spot when sifting through your packs. This product may not be for basic insert collectors as there are only two: Primetimers and Primed Rookies. They look okay, but they don't blend in with the look and design of the rest of the product. It seems more like a low-end design compared everything else.

Rookie autographs share the same photography as their base card. Unfortunately, the signatures use stickers.

One of the main selling points of 2012 Topps Prime Football are the different variation levels of relics and autographs. Relic cards feature a wide variety of colorful jersey swatches, patches, gloves, and other football related materials. They also come in single, dual, triple, and quad level versions of each.

The Autograph Booklets look amazing in person. Pictures don't do them justice.

Checklist: 3.5/5.0

The checklist is rather narrow and is mainly focused on the 2012 rookie class. The base set is comprised of 100 veterans plus 50 rookie cards. There are 50 base rookie autographs highlighted by Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and Trent Richardson. Unfortunately, they use stickers. This product is aimed more at rookie collectors than those looking for veterans.

Value: 3.5/5.0

2012 Topps Prime Football hobby boxes are solid considering you're guaranteed four hits. The main problem is the lack of veterans. Some collectors mainly focus on rookies, so this product is ideal.

The many parallels make a nice challenge for master set collectors. Even though we didn't pull any, there are some amazing hits available. The Prime Rookie Autograph Relics Level 1 Booklets come with six different relic pieces including a glove, wristband, football, jersey patch, home jersey and an away jersey.

The Fun Factor: 4.5/5.0

2012 Topps Prime Football isn't just about the hits, although that's a large part. The cards are very durable with the thick card stock, so collecting them with your kids won't be an issue if you are worried about your cards getting messed up during handling. Boxes are priced reasonably enough that collectors can go back for more without worrying about spending a lot of money.

User Reviews

  1. I will start by telling you about the box I got at a local card shop yesterday. The box I purchased was missing the two autographes that you guaranteed as clearly stated on front of box in BOLD PRINT. Told the shop owner about this and he said he’d take care of it but I would probably get autos of average rookies at best. Card shop was KINEM’S SPORTSCARDS in erie,pa. I’m very disappointed about this and will never purchase TOPPS cards again if he is right. Otherwise this is what I would deem to be an average product based on amount of hits one should receive and overall quality.

  2. Same problem as the other reviewer! NO AUTOS in my box! I’m at least glad to hear I wasn’t the only one. I loved the Primes last year but it’s a shame if this is a common problem this year…I called Topps customer service directly. They gave me an address and instructions to mail the UPC from the box, a copy of my reciept and a letter of explanation and they’d have the cards out to me right away. I was pretty confused at first (counted the cards to make sure I didn’t miss a pack, etc), then just disappointed.

  3. Hey Ryan,
I didn’t have any problem with my hobby box, but I did want to point out that like in years past hobby and retail versions of this product differ. Hobby is printed on thicker card stock. Also photos of the rookies are different between hobby and retail, at least on the few that I have examples of both for.

  4. cynicalbuddha (ID 66241) » Thanks for the heads-up!

  5. TOO MANY ROOKIE VARITIES.KEEPING TRACK IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.VERY LITTLE VALUE DIFFERENCE IF AT ALL.PIC. VARIATIONS,COLOR,ALL THESE VARITIES MAKE COLLECTING DIFFICULT.

  6. I’m liking the trend of dialing back the number of parallels. Of course, TP12 still goes insane on the rookies, but at least I can get my veteran cards for my collection a lot easier.
From the perspective of somebody who is a collector primarily and a dealer minimally, I’ve gotten pretty tired sets that have 5 or 10 variations for the same card, most of which are just different colored borders or stripes.
And since I don’t have a rookie to collect this year, I don’t really care about the ridiculousness of the chase cards. Although with Andy Dalton last year, I got close to just giving up collecting completely since it just became impossible to keep up.

Also a nitpick… Topps pre-release stuff lists the Hobby insert vet parallel as “Copper”. They all look gold to me. That’s already caused some problems on eBay.

  7. I’ve been in love with this product since it’s inception in 2011. The full bleed thick cards are awesome. I managed to pull a Level 1 Booklet this year and couldn’t be more pleased. I do think Topps is going a bit overboard with single, dual, triple jersey cards of individual players. The Hobby version, thick cards are the only way to go. After handling the thick cards, the retail one seem so cheesy. There could be some more veteran presence with the hits. I recall last year getting Ray Lewis and Hines Ward Auto/Quad Relic Level V. Still a good value in my experience.

  8. Whoops. Product came out in 2010. Another thought…I’m so glad Topps is not following the practise of using awesome patches with cards #d to 1350 or so like Finest or Platinum. 785, which is the high I’ve seen so far with Prime, is high enough. And, hey, what’s with the little platform in the boxes? kind of stupid.

  9. I like the lower numbered cards and not getting into the /1200 range. I have a big question tho. I pulled a doug martin prime level V with 4 relics and an auto #’d 5/10. I then pulled a prime level v redemption for martin. Is there a difference? Its thesame card # so why is there an insert and a redemption? The redemption gives no info as to the version…whether base, copper, gold, etc.

  10. phillip (ID 84737) » Congrats on the big pulls! The redemption is likely for the regular version. Parallels are usually noted on the redemptions. It’s possible Topps needed more autographs, which is why you got the rare one and need to wait for the more common one.

  11. Thats what I thought. I always check ur site for product info and checkists. I also got a level v robert griffin #d to/25 and his base v #d to 300. It was a nice case bust for the price. I got 15 level V’s in the case, some redemptions but no booklets. The martin had a pink wristband and griffin had a football a 3 color patch. Blackmon was another level V i pulled. I pulled a luck auto of his base card #d to/99. Several more too. I will be opening a shop and website soon. Fornow I sell as “2-cardguys” on ebay if ppl have interest they can message or browse as I slowly build inventory listed. Listing is a slow process.

  12. was also shorted the 2 autos lets hope topps customer service is better than panini. it took 2 years to get a problem w panini corrected

  13. I really like the 2012 Topps Prime product because they are well worth their cost. I broke open a box to get a Russell Wilson Prime V Copper Parallel and a few autos, but I really like what they did with the Prime Inserts. I sold the Russell Wilson card for 70 and covered the cost of the box. I always say that if the box pays for itself, it is a great box. I can say the same about high end boxes, to be sure, such as Exquisite Basketball, but for a consumer-friendly cost, nothing beats the Topps Prime.

  14. Like the 2 autos and 2 relics per box, as well as all the rookie cards. A few more veteran autos or relics would be nice.

  15. I liked this product last year, haven’t given 12 a run yet. But i like how there is good photography in the base set. Usual Topps brands either have the cartoonish look or a border that takes away the play on the field. This one is very clean. I like the autographs and auto jersey rookies in this product and the chance at getting a booklet with unique pieces to collect instead of the same ole same ole jersey card.

  16. I like the photo quality of these cards. I love the autographs. The patch cards are my favorites.

  17. Last year was my first time collecting since i was a child. The first product i bought was topps prime. It has been my favorite product since getting back into cards. The quality of the cards is great, i love the parallel colors. And the patch cards are the best you can get anywhere hobby or retail.

No other topps product, or any other companies product will ever be able to match what prime has meant to me. I hope it becomes a mainstaay for topps for years to come.

  18. 5 Stars, A great product filled with Hits.
RC list is great, with the potential to get a great GU or parallel. Not overly priced as some sets are

  19. Were to start. I like the focus on rookies in this product. There could have been a little more attention on vets tho. Nice relics and i absolutley love the booklets. All and all a nice product.

  20. For someone who is just getting into collecting Football this is a pretty good box to start with.
There are probably too many variation parallels but for me that’s ok. I really like the look of these cards.

  21. I really like this set and how there is such a variety with the cards. I love the booklet cards, that was an AMAZING creation and idea. I also love how good looking the patch, parallel, and auto cards look. They all have a sleek and eye appealing design. The only thing that i dont like are how the base cards look. They are kind of boring. You should make the base cards look nice like platinums base. But other than that this is a great set and i cant wait to see how the 2013 set will turn out

  22. I was in love with this product initially. I even bought a second case. Overall the value is good for the number of autos you get and if you hit a Luck or RG3 it could pay for the box and en some. However you can get hit with really bad boxes. It’s surprising the Level V autos don’t sell better

    Overall a good value

  23. I keep buying this product because it give the best chance for something good. Not many “filler” autographs. The potential for big hits is in every box.

  24. I recently just started collecting football this year because of all of the top rookies that are in this years class. I bought several boxes of other football cards and I love topps prime the best. I like the simple design of the base cards and parallels. But ultimately I love how you are guaranteed 4 “hits” and two of which are autographs. I love this products because of the autographed relic cards you receive with every box. There are clean and just awesome

  25. I love this product. Of all the Topps FB so far this year this has really become my go to for hits. The 4:1 ratio of hits for the price makes it the best product to choose if your looking for nice pulls. The design of the cards is on point as well. Very eye appealing! With only 150 base cards total makes realatively easy to build your set. Even if you decide to only buy retail with this product. KUDOS to the entire staff at Topps for 2012 Prime.

  26. I think Topps Prime Football is my favourite product of the year the design is clean and simple you have a good chance to get a big hit.

Thanks this is my entry for the 4 hobby box contest!

  27. I’ve only purchased retail packs/boxes and I love these cards but at 10 rookies per box the percentage of pulling a Luck,Wilson or RG3 are super low,Correct me if i’m wrong on that.
Anyways totally torn between buying a box of Prime or Finest any input or opinions welcomed!?!?. Anyhow I love the full bleed photos and simple design topps prime cards are sweet! already pulled retail RG3 and Luck rookies

  28. Participated in a “break” on-line & had 8 teams. I figured w/ 4 hits per box, I had a good shot. Not so fast! The box (much like one discussed earlier) only had the 2 relic cards & 0 of the Auto cards! The dealer has to contact topps, wait for reply/cards, then send out…bummer, seems simple enough of a problem to correct. Not why so many people are having this issue?

  29. Got more of a question hoping someone could answer, good luck getting ahold of an actual person at Topps, I pulled a TY Hilton level 5 auto/relic and then in the next box pulled a redemption card for TY Hilton level 5 auto/relic, is that the same exact card? or a different variation or something???

  30. I hit a doug martin level 1 relic book autograph. anyone know what i should ask for it?

  31. Very nice cards

  32. I have bought 6 boxes of 2012 Topps Prime. I have had 4 huge hits total and 2 huge hits in the same box. I got a Doug Martin auto gold rainbow 1/1 and in the same box got a Russel Wilson Level I book auto 10/10. I got an Andrew Luck Level V copper rainbow 10/10 and an Andrew Luck Level II book 5/15. I have had the best luck with pulling huge hits from this product. I am absolutely in love with 2012 Topps Prime. I got 3 out of my 4 huge hits in August and September 2013 so there are still a bunch of big hits left to pull. 5 stars all day!
