1973 Topps Baseball Cards

1973 Topps Baseball Cards

Brand:

Product Details

1973 Topps Baseball consists of 660 cards. This represents a 127-card decrease from the 1972 Topps Baseball release. It also has the distinction of being the smallest Topps baseball card set of the 1970s and the last vintage Topps set to be released in a multiple series format. Hall of Fame third basemen Mike Schmidt's rookie card (#615) is the highlight of the checklist. However, rookie cards of Goose Gossage (#174), Bob Boone (#613) and Dwight Evans (#614) also draw a good bit of interest from collectors. Also of note is that 1973 Topps marks the final standard issue baseball card appearance of Willie Mays (#305). Additionally, the checklist contains cards from over 25 Hall of Fame players, including, Robert Clemente (#50), Hank Aaron (#100), Pete Rose (#130), Johnny Bench (#380), and Carl Yastrzemski (#245), to name a few.

Design

The 1973 Topps Baseball card design delivers a fairly drastic change from the flamboyant offering of the previous year. Using a much more conservative approach, the cards utilize a wide variety of photograph types that dominate much of the landscape of the card. From head shots, upper body poses, posed and in-action photos, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the variety, and that might just be the point. The lower right corner of the card displays a silhouette of a player in one of multiple fielding positions set against a colored circle. The player's team, name and position adorn the bottom of the card to the left of the aforementioned design element. The design has always been met with mixed reaction by collectors, even to this day. Some prefer the simplicity, others complain about the lack of color and uninspired photography.

The card backs utilize a yellow and black color scheme. Biographical and statistical information share space with an anecdotal cartoon and a mini-biographical write-up. The flow of the information on the back of the card is comprehensive without being cluttered or busy. This attribute is due to the vertical orientation of the card back, which Topps had not used in several years. The card number is set on the 'sweet spot" of a baseball and are easy to identify and read.

Subsets

Included in the 1973 Topps Baseball card set are several subsets within the base checklist:

  • League Leaders: #61-68
  • Playoff Highlights: #201 and #202
  • World Series Highlights: #203-210
  • All-Time Leaders: #471-478
  • Topps Rookie Stars: #601-616

Distribution and High Numbers

Originally available in wax packs, rack packs, cello packs, and vending boxes, this set was the last Topps release printed in and distributed by series. The reason this is important is that many collectors divide vintage and modern eras with the 1973 Topps Baseball card set. While this interpretation will always be debated, it is unarguable that the 1973 release marked the end of an era. As to be expected, cards from the final series (#529 to 660) are often times more difficult to find than those of previous series. Falling within the checklist of the final series is the set's most coveted card, the previously mention rookie card of Mike Schmidt. Coincidentally, Schmidt shares the card with another popular player, that of Ron Cey.

Errors, Variations Supplements and Condition Issues

The 1973 Topps Baseball card set has minimal errors and variations, none are really noteworthy as they command no premium. The most frequently attributed to cards are those of managers, whose background contrast seemed to be changed during the pre-production process. The most common condition issue for the set is centering. Notoriously mis-cut in all directions, high-grade versions of cards carry a premium as a result of this production flaw. Two of the major stars effected are Joe Morgan (#230) and Carl Yastrzemski (#245).  Interesting to note is that for a company that had for years experimented with other types of baseball related products, no test issues or ancillary products were produced by the Topps Company in 1973.

Regardless of your opinion of the card design or definition of vintage vs modern, 1973 Topps represents a changing of the guard in terms of the way cards would be printed and distributed moving forward. The loaded checklist of Hall of Famer players and the rookie card of an iconic third baseman and eventual 500 Home Run Club member, makes this a must have set.
