The 587-card 1961 Topps Baseball set represents yet another record-setting checklist expansion for Topps. This was due in large part to the two new teams which were added to the American League for the 1961 season. There are three especially valuable rookie cards to be found within the set, all of whom are Hall of Famers: Juan Marichal (#417), Billy Williams (#141) and Ron Santo (#35). The later two both coming from the Chicago Cubs, it is not often you have two Hall of Fame players, whose rookie cards debut in the same set.

Issued in a total of seven different series, there are 4 subsets in the checklist:

  • League Leaders (#41-50)
  • World Series Highlights (#401-410)
  • MVPs of the 1950s (#471-486)
  • Sporting News All-Stars (#566-589)

The 1961 Topps Baseball set is a challenge to complete because of the sheer number of cards in it. The easiest cards to find in this set are cards #1 through #370, but beyond that things can get quite tough, particularly when trying to track down the high-numbered cards (#523-589) from the later series.

Measuring the now standard 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches, the design of the cards are laid out in a vertical orientation. Utilizing a more simplified presentation, the cards feature portraits of the players with the player name and team displayed in a small colored box along the bottom. Gone are team logos and facsimile signatures. The card backs do not contain any puzzles or neat quizzes, but rather, the player's vital season-by-season and career statistics. These are however, accompanied by the familiar cartoon in which kids had become accustomed to seeing. Many consider this to be one of the true classic baseball card sets for the simplicity of design, letting the photograph and statistics to stand on their own.

For the first time, interspersed among the set are designated checklist cards (numbers: 17, 98, 189, 273, 361, 437, and 516). These can be particularly difficult to find in clean unmarked condition. In addition to the aforementioned rookie cards, the set also hosts the following key cards: Roger Maris (card #576) and Mickey mMantle (card #578). It is only fitting that these two Bronx Bombers were assembled so closely together on the checklist. As fans will remember, 1961 was the year of the original home run "chase", with both players battling it out to break Babe Ruth's, long held, single season record for home runs.

Because of the sheer number of cards in the set, this can be a very costly set to complete, particularly in high grade condition. There are a handful of variations and errors cards that bring the master set count to 592. The cards from the 1961 Topps Baseball set are notorious for having centering issues and print dots. However, because of the key Hall of Fame rookies and numerous Hall of Fame players, it has become a favorite of vintage collectors.
