The 1953 Bowman Color Baseball set consists of 160 color cards, a smaller set than the previous year's set. It is considered by many collectors to be the most visually appealing vintage baseball card set to ever be produced.
The 1953 Bowman set does contain any significant rookie cards. However, it did yield one of Hall of Famer Stan Musial's classic vintage era cards (#32 in the set).
Design
This was the first set to feature full-color player photographs on the fronts of the cards. Bowman certainly got it right with this set. It is simple in design, yet very crisp and clean-looking. The fronts of the cards contain only the player's color picture and nothing else. The player's name and facsimile autographs are not present. The backs of the cards contain players names, bios, and statistics. Advertisements on the reverse of the card have also been removed. This was Bowman's first set that included player statistics on the backs of the cards.

The 1953 Bowman Color set was the company’s very expensive attempt to out do their up and coming rival Topps. The cards are indeed visually striking and going the color photograph route as opposed to the painted images of the players really brings the collector closer to the game.
Perhaps one of the “best of the best” in vintage singles heralds from this set: card #53 of Dodgers shortstop Pee Wee Reese. The Reese is a great example of an action pose with Reese leaping high in the air to make a play.
